PCBs with black solder mask: advantages, limits, silkscreen
Black gives the board a discreet, premium look, but there are three things to know before you choose it.
What black solder mask is
Solder mask is the layer of lacquer that covers the copper, insulates the circuit and leaves only the solder areas exposed. The standard colour is green; at PCB-ELECTRA you can also choose black, white, red or blue. Non-standard colours carry a small surcharge, shown live in the price calculator.
Why choose black
- Look. A black board looks discreet and professional, suited to visible products: consumer electronics, instruments, presentation prototypes.
- Less glare. A dark matt surface reflects less light.
- Contrast with components. Exposed pads and white silkscreen stand out clearly on a black background.
What to know before you choose
- Silkscreen. On black mask, black silkscreen is invisible. Choose white silkscreen (or yellow). White silkscreen is the standard on FR4 anyway. On aluminium (IMS) boards, where the standard silkscreen is black, change the silkscreen colour if you choose black mask.
- Visual inspection. Tracks and defects are harder to see by eye on black than on green, which matters when debugging prototypes. At PCB-ELECTRA every board is optically inspected (AOI) and electrically tested regardless of colour; see electrical test and AOI.
- Heat. A dark surface absorbs more radiated heat than a white one. On power-LED boards, where you conduct heat through the aluminium, white mask is usually the choice for light reflection; read aluminium for LED.
The mask design rules are the same for every colour: solder mask and silkscreen.
How to order it
- In the price calculator, in the Solder mask section, choose black. The surcharge appears immediately in the estimate.
- For Silkscreen choose white (or yellow).
- Send the request; the official quote arrives within 1 business day.

Frequently asked questions
Does black mask cost more than green?
Green is the standard colour. The other colours, including black, carry a small surcharge, shown live in the price calculator.
Which silkscreen works on black mask?
White or yellow. Black silkscreen is not visible on black mask.
Are defects harder to see on a black board?
By eye, yes: the contrast with the tracks is lower. Every board is still optically inspected (AOI) and electrically tested, whatever the colour.
